Have you held the lens up to a very bright light and looked thru it ( just the lens, not mounted on camera)??
Maybe there is hazing or seperation or extreme dust or something affecting the sharpness and contrast?
I have the SM version and it is very sharp and constrasty especailly the center sharpness.
