If you're working in the dark you can remove on end of the canister with a church key, and pull out the spool.

What brand are they Shel?
I've never been able to make one work, takes
me about 25 tries to get the leader out.
Always afraid I'll scratch the film.

You can purchase an inexpensive "leader retriever" which solves that problem ;-)) I've got a couple of small ones, one that stays with the camera bag and the other that lives in the darkroom.

IIRC I did used to cut the leader slightly rounded,
that seemed to help getting it started.
Cut before I opened the cassette, of course.
Unfortunately that means a camera where you can
leave the leader out a bit when you rewind.
Rats! Never thought about that, the 5n's won't do it.
I WILL have to learn over again.

I can understand why mankind hasn't given up war. During a war you get to drive tanks through the sides of buildings and shoot foreigners - two things that are usually frowned on during peacetime.
