i did just that last night.
i took a file that Rob kindly gave me, "rezzed it up" ("bicubic
sharper") to give
20x30 @240 dpi,, sharpened (all in PS CS), and printed a center
portion of that file,
and...
...and nothing magical happened.
it printed, effectively, at breathtaking 2 lpmm, just as expected. very mushy.
might be ok if viewed from a couple of meters.
otoh, an 8x10 print from that file is quite good.
another thing i noticed is that there is little difference in quality
between 8x10 prints from canon g2 @iso50 and *istd @iso400
(*istd is better, but not by much).
basically these tests confirmed the resolution numbers given at dpreview:
1500 "resolved" pixels for g2 and 1800 for *istd.
best,
mishka
