I agree with Cotty. A 3 Megapixel digital would be a better choice. Cheaper in the long run, even if she makes prints via a minilab.
Oh, she would. Her mom is farn more disadvantaged than her daughter. She gives the memory card up to her favorite clerk at the photo shop, and comes back later to pick up the prints... If it works for her...

I agree with you AND Cotty!
But, the request was for a film camera. I've tried to second guess my dauthter before. Ahhhhem...

In the meanwhile, who has an idea of a simple, 35mm film version, fully auto P&S Pentax, with perhaps a 3X zoom lens. Assuming all the Pentax lenses are of equal capability in that camera line, does it all boil down to price?
You're giving her a film camera?
I'd go for digital. The film camera will get used on and off for a couple
of years until she gets a cameraphone, then will never be picked up again.
On the other hand, once this little bulldog (granddaughter) gets hold of an idea...it usually gets pretty well chewed up before being spit out. She'll go thru PLENTY of film, all of which her mom pays for, of course, so both know the inherent pitfalls...
