Only one Fresnel pattern and no spilt field centre means that manual
focusing is not as easy or convenient as it could be, compared to many other
cameras - IMO. The good thing about it is a clean and beautiful viewfinder
image.

Sorry, have to strongly disagree.  I focus manually about 90% of the
time with my *istDs and never use the focus confirmation.  I find the
viewfinder just fine for manual focus.  Could be
your lenses or eyesight maybe?
