You may then argue that demand was low because of the quality problems, and not the design or concept itself, and thus the idea hasn't really been tried out in a reasonable manner.

There could be lot of demand. If all it takes is to not install the
colour filter array, and new firmware, to get a superb-resolution
high-iso B&W camera...

Imagine a true 6MP B&W dslr with very clean base iso 500-800 and pushed up to
8000-12500... (based on the Kodak difference in iso between normal and
monochrome body).
