I think it's already been answered by someone else:

Because they can.

If film cameras told one how many frames (or rolls) have been shot,
the same people who tell us how many digi-frames they've shot, would
have been telling us how many rolls they'd taken.

In addition, I'd also agree with those who have expressed surprise
with the sheer number they've shot, now that cost of an individual
frame isn't the issue it used to be.
