I use a long lens for a lot of things. I recently shot my daughter in the garden with my 400/5.6. It was a nice shot because it was easy to blur the background, and I was able to catch her unawares. And of course for sports and other long distance action shots like this: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2266884 These were both with the 400/5.6 and the *istD. So the field of view is the equivelant of 600mm on a 35mm film camera.
