In Mac OS X versioning, all "dot" releases are major releases,
with large numbers of new features and enhancements. (EG: 10.3
was a major release over 10.2, with over 150 new features as
well as significant performance improvements.) Major releases
are distributed with new computer system purchases and in the
retail channel at a per unit price.
Mac OS X "dot-dot" releases (eg: 10.3.4 -> 10.3.5) are minor
updates, incorporating small feature improvements and bug fixes,
distributed at no cost to users.
Major releases will typically see six to eight minor updates in
the course of their life cycle.
