By the way they both report crashes as virtually nonexistent. This is true of my dual G4 as well. The latest operating system (10.3.7) is very bulletproof.

If by "crashes" you mean the system fails to operate properly, I agree.

I've had.... two system crashes in the past 12 months, I think. And I believe that I was largely responsible for both of them (I was fiddling with settings at the time). The system has never died while I was doing real work.

I agree with that statement. However...
Since moving up to 10.3.7, I've had a number of application failures I never had before.
I can no longer access and use my Epson Printer Utility to test and clean my print head nozzles. The spinning beach ball never stops.
My Netscape 7.2 has just up and quit, several times, right in the middle of typing an answer to email. No consistency to it. I can't repeat the keystrokes that accompanied the app going down. In fact, I don't know if it was related to what I was doing.

Overall, I do like 10.3.7 better than previous releases.
But, either some of my applications need to be updated to run properly with the latest Panther, or 10.3.7 brings some new bug with it that causes what I've seen.

I'm happy with 10.3.7, but I could be happier if all of my previously solid applications worked as they used to!

10.4 is due very soon. In recent years every new operating system has been a substantial improvement over the last. I expect this will again be a plus.

Be aware that Apple do charge for 10.x releases. It's not obvious from the numbering scheme but these are pretty major updates. I think they charge US$129 - this is the full price; there is no "upgrade" pricing. I don't think it's too bad considering the amount of improvements they make:

The next digit (eg going from 10.3.6 to 10.3.7) is free via Software Update. Patches and minor updates are released regularly and if you keep these up-to-date the next 10.3.x release would be a smaller download for you. 10.3.8 is on its way, even with 10.4 about to be released.

Cheers,
