The .dbx files are notorious for that. The nice thing about Outlook is that it stores all your info in 1 .pst file, this file can be backed up, moved, imported, exported and archived without problems. (Usually) ;-/ You can also move selected messages to a .pst and remove them from your main file. Then if you need to refer to them just open that new .pst, look up what you need and close it again. That's how I archive the PDML stuff, 1 .pst for every month.
I just had one customer lose ALL their stuff with OE, they created a new profile and 'moved' all the .dbx files. They never worked again! They use Outlook now.
