when the definition of quality is recognizability of the contents, they didn't want any more that they are getting. a very small fraction of photographers are doing it for art. the vast majority is doing it to record events.

If I hear you correctly, you are saying that consumers wanted a much
larger quantity of inferior photos rather than a smaller quantity of
superior photos.  And that is just what they got.
