From page 7 of the K-1000 manual:

"As the K-1000 has the built-in photoswitch, the exposure meter turns on as soon as the photocell receives the light. To minimize the battery consumption, keep the lens cap on when the camera is not being used."

I have two of them that I use infrequently. The meters work after months of inactivity.

There's something very satisfying about the clunking sound that shutter makes.
