The shutter is definitely too noisy for wildlife. I use mine for
occasional (and so far unsuccessful) attempts at lightning shots and
other long exposure situations. I use an old fashioned cable release
with locking screw to hold the shutter open. That's pretty hard duty
for electronic shutters.
What was going on: The whole family went out together and my father had
just recently had his hip replaced. We found a hummingbird feeder being
visited by "Doctor Birds" (streamer-tailed hummingbirds -- the Jamaican
national bird.) I took a few pictures of same with my nice quiet Optio.
My dad wanted some with his camera (the K1000) but because he wasn't
moving too well, would I take them with his camera? WOW that thing is
*LOUD*! I hadn't used a K1000 in years, since mine was stolen. I think
every SLR I've owned since had a quieter shutter than the K1000 --
certainly every SLR I own at the moment does! The shutter was scaring me
as well as the little birds!
I also don't miss the K1000 on account of its size and having got used
to certain other conveniences like shutter speed and aperture visible in
the viewfinder ... on/off switch ... focusing aids ... available
autoexposure ... I loved it when I had one, but I wouldn't go back to it.
