I usually delete files from the memory card while it's in the card 
reader, probably for no other reason than I find it more convenient. 
WRT re-formatting, my experience is with CF cards in a Canon A75 and SD 
cards in the istDS.  I don't reformat after every use and have had no 
problems.  When re-formatting IS done, I think most manuals recommend 
that it be done in camera.
