What I've done (and uncovered a lemon or two): Made sure there's a return privilege.
Shot a roll of slide film, including low-angle shots of a tape measure focused at various points, flash pics, and a series of a clear blue or even grey sky starting with slowest shutter/smallest aperture and working toward fastest shutter/largest aperture. Then I move on to the bells and whistles, one by one. Are you replacing the late lamented MZ5n?
