it's a sign that either Pentax wanted terms that Sony didn't like, that Sony found more willing support in KM, or that Sony was never interested in Pentax.

Couldn't that be a sign of strenght on Pentax behalf?
I don't think Sony need to go in cahoots with KM if they were that strong or had that strong potential in the DSLR market. Likewise, I don't think the merging of Konica and Minolta was due to the strenght of Minolta....
