Colin I don't think it's correct to say that the DS is 'aimed more at novices'. Certainly it has features aimed at novices like the various 'PICT' modes but you don't have to use them and it has a host of features that will satisfy experienced photographers.
It sounds like my photography needs are similar to yours - I use a range of M42, K, KA and AF lenses and find the DS handles them all well. I also shoot mainly with manual exposure or aperture priority. I use an early version of the 90mm SP Tamron with the DS and I'm pleased with the results to date.
