I'm not sure why you'd want to do that for image editing. But, at
least on Mac OS X, I know of at least one software package that will
run the Apple Cinema Display 20" in portrait orientation. The fellow
at the job site I'm contracting for does that to write source code,
where it's very effective.
For me, a 20" display works well in landscape orientation when image
editing. What would actually be best is a square screen... ;-)
Square would be useful, my question was due to recently using a
wide aspect
ratio screen to edit, it wasn't my cup-o-tea particularly given
that the
majority of my prints are composed in a portrait orientation.
Just differences in ways of working. I agree that a more square or
portrait orientation would give more room for displaying verticals. I
used to use two monitors, both 4:3 format ... tools and palettes on
the second monitor and the main monitor for the image, but with a 20"
cinema presentation there seems plenty of room on the main screen for
either horizontal or vertical oriented photos and all the tools and
palettes. A big 4:3 monitor seems to get more crowded ... Had a 4:3
proportion 17" for a bit and it was nicer for displaying photos but
less useful for editing.
A good bit is simply what you get used to, I imagine.
