I've used a Sunpak 383 in the hot shoe without any problems. Fires
the flash in manual and Av mode easily. Be sure the shutter speed is
1/180 sec or slower.
I would suspect a bad hot shoe adapter, I've had a lot of them that
had problems. I would also recommend using a Wein Safe Sync to be on
the safe side ...
