I was just reading (photo safaris) that Antelope Valley in the Monument Valley area (actually I think it's a part of Monument Valley) has some great slot canyons if that is one's bag. I am not sure one doesn't have to hire a guide to get there though. By jeep. Some nice pictographs in that area too.
