If I was starting from scratch now, I very much doubt Pentax would come into
my mind for a DSLR, simply because any advertising I've seen is directed at
the P&S market, so I'd assume they didn't make one.

Apart from via this list, I don't know anyone else who has modern Pentax
equipment and my local shops promote Canon & Nikon equipment. 

That pretty much tells the whole story. I think the cameras Pentax sells are
fantastic, but it's like trying to sell cars without a dealer network and no
advertising. The only famous people of late I've seen with a Pentax product
have been 6x7s!
