Based on my conversations with the folks doing power for laptops, it's far trickier than you might think. Battery state is pretty dynamic.

Sony's done it best in their cameras with the InfoLithium cells ... each battery has logic in it that communicates with the camera to estimate how much time is left. I found the accuracy to be remarkable.

Pentax' decision to go with a standards-form-factor battery means that they can't get that kind of information, so the indicator is just a rough guide to battery state.

Happily, it's generally good enough. Have backups ready when they get to half. Replace when they show empty. What more do you really need? ;-)
