When I'm using my old lenses that do not have an "A" setting, like my SMC 200mm F4, on my *ist-DS, I gather that the "crippled mount" only allows me

Is it true that I can't use this lens in my *ist-DS at F22, because the lens doesn't close down during the exposure? I've been trying to figure out how
to do this, but haven't been successful.

You can use any M/K-bayonet lens easily.

First go to the Custom settings Menu. Set "Using Aperture Ring" set to Permitted. Leave that set all the time as it doesn't affect anything else.

Lenses without an A mode are normally used in Manual exposure mode; the DS implements a semi-automatic, aperture priority metering operation:
- set exposure selector to Manual
- set desired aperture with the lens' ring.
- press AE-Lock button

The lens will stop down for a moment and the camera will take a reading and set the shutter speed. All adjustments beyond that are manual using the aperture ring and the thumbwheel for shutter speed. If you hold the DoF preview lever, the display on the lower right of the viewfinder will show you the deviation in EV from your metered reading to the present scene and setting in the +/- 3.0EV range.

Other notes:
- These lenses will also work in Av mode, but only wide-open. All other exposure modes default to Av mode. - Metering patterns are limited to CW Averaging and Spot. If you're set to Matrix metering pattern, the camera will automatically default to CW Averaging. - Aperture values will not be displayed on the LCD or viewfinder, and will not be in the EXIF information. - Only the center focusing sensor will be enabled for focus confirmation.
