Go as close as you can to the tank, preferrably lean the front of the lens against the glass.

This will eliminate glare from ambient light sources and bright t-shirts among the public too.

No it can't, the built in flash is what controls the 360.

That's what I thought... but I figured I'd ask to be sure I wasn't missing

You can set the built in to _ONLY_ control the
360 and not contribute to overall exposure though.

Done! I didn't realize I could do that, but there it is in B&W (page 96 of the camera manual).... Thanks again! I'll see how that works. I'm headed to an aquarium, and my goal is to minimize fireballs and glare from the flash on the fishtanks. Being able to fire the FGZ from an angled seemed pointless (at least in theory) if the OTF flash still went off... but maybe this'll cure that. I think I'll pack the 500 FTZ and extension cord
just in case, though.
