I respectfully disagree with the disagreement: The ACLU may occasionally
represent *people* who are distasteful or repugnant, but it's
constitutional rights that they are defending. It's easy to get
emotionally caught up in these kinds of issues and lose sight of the
distinction between the two - That's what tyrants, and potential
tyrants, rely on. 

I believe it was Rousseau who pointed out that democracy and liberty are
often *conflicting* forces.
