People in authority (and that's too generic a way of stating things) are just like us with an important exception. They have the authority to use force in circumstances where the rest of us can't.
It speaks volumes for the civilization of Western countries that the cops are for the most part good natured, rational people but the laws are getting worse and people are living in greater fear, much of it plain and simple paranoia. Nor do I think that doing one's job is always a valid excuse. Adolf Eichmann's defense was based on the premise that he was only doing his job. I don't mean to suggest that Eichmann II is just around the corner or inevitable but if more and more innocent activities are treated with suspicious it does open the door. I think there's only one way out of this bind and that is to oppose not the cops but the laws.
