If what I've seen on TV is to be trusted, China is the largest consumer of building materials these days. I think it's been claimed they buy in order of 40% of all steel produced, for example. Concrete, glass and wood is high too.

Recently, there was an official tender on rights to build 3gen mobile networks, where 3-4 bidders were accepted.

Of course most of this may go into the urban areas, leaving the countryside as it is. But I find it hard to believe that the chinese will repeat the mistakes of the soviets.

It's a different people with a different culture, and I'll bet they'll find some quite unique mistakes of their own...:-)
