Nature photog here.
I'm currently shooting about 95 % digital, the rest slide film.
For me the big trade off is my increased time vs the improved control of the 
output with digital.
If you're not going larger than a 13" x 19" print, you can get away with a 6mp 
camera capture.   
If you're consistantly needing larger than that, a scanned slide/neg is the way 
to go.
With digital, I do a quick review after the shoot (to delted the obvious) 
followed by a more detailed computer editing @ home before I save.

I think the extra time involvement with digital (at least in my case) is 
sometimes overlooked.
