You're right. I've worked on animated television commercials at high
end rendering farms, including RGA, Rhythm and Hues, and Digital
Domain. The animation was done on Unix SUN workstations. (I think
that's the right terminology. I'm not a techy :-). RGA had to rent some
higher end machines when we did some commercials for Chrysler that used
animated CATIA files as a starting point. The graphic design, which
begins life as stylized, detailed single frames, was done on Macs in
the studio.

Actually it is high-end video editing where Macs are predominant. If
you go out to California and visit any of the companies doing FX and
CGI work for the motion picture industry you will only see Macs.
Maybe as workstations.... But in the high-end rendering farms it's
either clusters of high-end 64bit linux boxes or even 64bit UNIX (HP -
watch the credits of Shrek; or SUN - watch Finding Nemo) which are
attached to massive storage units. (having young children and going to
see a lot of animated movies, I always watch the credits and cheer
silently when the "systems administrators" are listed... sad but
true)
