I have one. About 6 months experience.
Once i did test, regarding sharpening...

so plain scan without USM (Epson software) was too soft. No grain, no noise, but too soft.

Medium sharpen and Large sharpen was too much. Image was too noisy, and no real gain in sharpness.

Small amount of sharpeing did the best job. Image was still without noise, but there was noticeable amount of edge sharpness, when compared with plain image.

3170 is good and cheap scanner for MF. Not for 35mm. But it depends... i got some real good A4 (20x30cm) prints from Astia 100F/35mm scanned with Epson.

Another scanner question:

Does anyone have any opinions of, or experience with, "photo" scanners like the Epson 3170 Photo? How do their film scanning capabilities compare to a "real" film scanner?
