A thought occurred from looking at your picture.
IIRC, the button to release the lens from "A" position can be trapped in a different groove (on the inside...) than where it should be, and that it takes a bit of fiddling to get it in the right place with the spring and all.

The ring is jammed in this position. Note how it's not only past the "A" setting but there is also a small gap between the aperture ring and the other piece. The aperture ring can be moved in and out by maybe 1-2mm. It can also be rotated by about the width of the "A" button (ie not very far).
