Adam, you should try Ltd and FA* lenses then. They usually have
focussing rings at least as well damped as the ones in ring-USM
driven lenses.
And USM is a win for AF users, with faster focus and less hunting.
I won't agree about hunting - this factor depends more on in camera
AF logic - if you compare two similar lenses in Nikon mount - one
with SWM (Nikon's name for ultrasonic motors) motor and second one
with classic, scredriven AF, there will be no difference in hunting.
In all other factors I agree with you and would add quietness and FTM
(the latter thing we already have in DA and DFA lenses despite
classic AF).
All in all Pentax needs to make this move as it is now the only
camera company with DSLRs that doesn't have USM driven lenses. Right
now even Olympus got in-lens AF motors, of ultrasonic type in new
Sigmas for 4/3.
