Seconded. It's actually required by law in this country for both pushbikes and motorcycles, but I do occasionally see idiots not wearing them (or worse, with helmet draped over the handlebars). Seatbelts must also be used here.
It only takes one moment's inattention, not necessarily on your part... I've been struck by cars twice; both times I came out uninjured. The second time I was lucky as I'd been hit from the side and the impact shoved me into the oncoming lane, which happened to be empty at the time.
