I had two SMC PENTAX-A 50/1.7 and both had plastic bodies. The only thing 
metal was the inner barrel which holds the glasses. For this reason, this 
particluar lens has a common "unsmooth" aperture ring problem (some F lenses 
have the same problem as well) and cracking screw holes inside. I 
disassembled both so I know this lens very well. On the other hand, the f1.4 
version was made of metal mainly. Only the focus and aperture rings are 
plastic. Mechanically, the f1.4 is a lot better.
