Mike, I would not immediately conclude that your problem is malware but it is quite puzzling. I am not a big fan of Zone Alarm, but my experience is that once you turn it off it stays off. Can you stick a standard "wired" nic into the machine and test to see if the system behaves the same way? This could eliminate malware as a possible cause.
