Perhaps it's a 300 small d from the mid fifties. That car looked a
lot like the 1930s Grosser Mercedes that Hitler rode in. I had a 300d
back in the seventies. Cool car. The leather on the seats was as
thick as a catcher's mitt. The radio had an extra amplifier under the
front seat and four speakers. The car originally came with matching
luggage and a carpeted step to help people get in the back seat. i
didn't have the luggage, but I had the step. The car had a self
leveling system, and a 3 liter six cylinder with mechanical direct
port fuel injeciton same as the 300 SLR. This was the FI system that
used a mechanical piston pump to deliver the fuel, not unlike older
heavy-duty diesels. That engine would cost a fortune today. It had a
direct acting overhead cam and turned out over 200 horsepower. I
drove the car from Chicago to New Jersey back around 1980. At night
of course. Amazing. What a sweet song that motor sang. Sold the car
soon after to a judge who had enough money to restore it.
