Air cooled engines can not meet the smog laws, of course they had to redesign it.
I think you mean the 914. IIRC, the 924, 928 and 958 all came out about the same time. The 924 was a sporty car (looked like a sports car, but without the performance), the 928 was the mainstream front engined sports car, and the 958 was the Ferrari killer. Maybe the 958 never actually hit the streets (it didn't in the US). Mr Porsche was the developer of the Volkswagon. The early Porsches had souped up VW engines in them.
