Indeed, a correctly implemented DNG with a full size hi-res embedded JPEG
would be best.

I use iView for archiving and it also uses the embedded full size JPEG
within DNG which, if you colour profile and correct in ACR within browser
and save as DNG, rather than the stand alone converter, that will give you
pretty accurate and fast renditions of all your archived material from
within it's own databases, even if the origianl file is off-line. iView
doesn't seem as "at home" with the PEF embedded JPEG's.

I'm an advocate of DNG as a standard native format for many reasons.

PEF, of course, already includes a full sized embedded JPEG "in-camera".
Unfortunately it's done at the lowest JPEG quality, so it's not useful for
much more than the preview (in-camera on the LCD, and also in the Pentax
Photo Browser) for which it was presumably included.

I've long wanted control over the quality of that JPEG - if I'm shooting raw
I'm not going to complain about the difference between a 3MB JPEG that's
quite usable for many purposes and a 1.5MB JPEG of no use to me.
