I've used my A*300/2.8 hand held but only to prove that it could be
done. Mostly it's mounted on my mono-pod and occasionally the tripod,
I never had any problems reaching the aperture ring under these
conditions (in the good old film body days). And in any case aperture
is seldom something I change a great deal when working with long fast
teles.
