Not only can they afford to do that, but they have no reason to do so.  Loss
leader to sell what?  For anything to work as a loss leader, there must be
something which will benefit from it.
I applaud their effort to offer the value for money.
Bear bone material cost of D50 is said to be about 9,850Yen (approx $100?).
DSLR is a big money making business and no wonder everybody is trying to
grasp the market share.
Besides, Pentax are like BMW (not I terms of the prestige of the brand) in
that they can make profit by a smaller scale production rather than N/C etc
who are like Toyota and GM, scale is crucial.
