I was very pleased with the quality of the 18-55 conmpared to what I
read about what to expect from a kit lens.  I also have the A24/2.8
which my (untrained?) eye cannot differentiate from the 18-55.  Also
(someone mentioned Canon), I ran into a Canon user somewhere who
remarked that this lens was much better than the kit he got when he
recently purchased a new body (I am not sure *how* he knew though).
It is a bit slow, but it's also a bit more affordable than a 16-45,
especially if you need to conserve funds for the 16-50.
