Doug,

Try using a hair dryer(warm the part only don't heat it way up) 
alternating with touching part of the ring with an ice cube and keep 
using just your hand/fingers as grippers/force applicators. The 
expansion/contraction will probably result in your being able to get it 
loose. Just be careful not to overheat or get water on sensitive 
parts/areas.Be patient. It will come loose. Hope this helps.
