I have found that by politely asking the seller if they will ship abroad, quite a number will. I make it easy for them - I explain my history with previous US sellers, payment options (use a middleman to send a US check / money order etc) and shipping options (similar middleman for mailing) if necessary. It seems like a lot of extra hassle, but if the item is worth it and you really want it... Another option is to search just the eBay.au site.
