James,
Posting items internationally from the US is not difficult.  Paying
can be more of a problem (scams), and issues are much more difficult
to resolve because of the distance.  Poor understanding of import
duties or attempts to avoid them are problematic as well (No, I won't
insure it for $600 but mark it's value as $50 or say it is a gift!).
Offer to pay in US$ and ask the seller if they will ship to you in AU.
 Most of them have just overlooked that option.  If this doesn't work,
try Cotty's advice of a middle man. I had a nice 645 lens show up in
my mail one day that I happily shipped on to AU.
