Boris, I tend to be on your side of the fence oin this, FWIW. I have 
bought a couple of small image circle lenses because that is what is 
available from Pentax in wide angles now.
Don't worry overmuch about the 70-210 not transmitting focal length 
data. My rather crude testing with a K100 and a 600mm lens indicates 
that shake reduction will work whether or not the camera knows which 
lens is mounted, and one can input focal length manually if you need to. 
Just pick a focal length somewhere on the long end of the zoom lens as 
your input.
