You probably have a bum set of batteries. I use NiMH AA's in the ist-D 
and get great performance. Be aware that the mAh rating isn't 
necessarily a realistic gauge of battery life in real-world conditions. 
The Imaging Resource article at 
http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/BATTS/BATTS.HTM will give you a 
good idea of what to expect. The batteries in their test are a bit 
outdated, but the article is good. I'm using the new 2700 mAh version 
of the Maha Powerex batteries that are second from the top in their 
test chart. In addition to providing a lot of shots on a charge, they 
have an amazing shelf life for NiMH.

IIRC, Pentax officially says you shouldn't use them. I know someone who 
did (in an ist-D) and was delighted with them.

If none of these suggestions meets with your approval, you can find 
CRV3 batteries on line for very low prices these days...
