Have you tried something like the Nikon 8000/9000 or Minolta Multi  
Pro?  These won't be quite as good as an Imacon but they're  
definitely a big step up from a flatbed without quite as much of a  
price jump.

The only thing I'd really wish from my Minolta is faster speed.  And  
if they'd updated it with a built-in Scanhancer as they did with the  
5400, then that would save me a little post-processing and would  
improve shadow detail slightly.  This is because the separate  
Scanhancer costs a bit of light and isn't quite neutral (a small  
price to pay for the resulting grain reduction).
