It's recommended, it makes a lot of sense. You're removing the stress of 
hanging a large heavy lens off the camera by the lens mount alone. This is 
the primary reason for mounting the camera on the lens, in case you didn't 
know. There have been cases of the lens breaking the mount out of the camera 
body, hence tripod collars on larger lenses, not just for balance.

I'll a agree with the logic there, but I have no trouble in low light and I 
can't think of a single time I've worked with no light, but I'm sure some do.
