It's recommended, it makes a lot of sense. You're removing the stress of hanging a large heavy lens off the camera by the lens mount alone. This is the primary reason for mounting the camera on the lens, in case you didn't know. I'll a agree with the logic there, but I have no trouble in low light and I can't think of a single time I've worked with no light, but I'm sure some do.
