I know that many of you have been toying with the
wireless functinality of the K10D since the last
firmware update. I was excited about it because I
wanted to see if it would be a low cost alternative
for doing product shots without the need for me to
purchase monolights.

So, I purchased a second AF-540FGZ and two of the TR
power pack III's. I also picked up a couple of flash
shoe brackets for my light stands. I set up my
seamless backdrop and tested the setup last night. In
short, it worked very, very well.

I had talked to Paul S. about the monolights he used
to create the shot he posted of the broshure. He was
able to achieve f11 @ ISO 100 with his setup. That
seemed like a really good target, since I'm hoping to
get similar results. Without much effort, I too was
able to get f11 @ ISO 100. Both flashes were set to +1
EV and a flash output of 1/1. However, I probably
could have had both flashes set to 0EV and moved the
stands closer to the table or used more reflective
umbrellas and gotten the same intensity.

I like this setup because it has some distinct
advantages over monolights. Namely:

1. the setup is less expensive than most monolight
packages
2. it is more portable and there's less hassle with
cords
3. there's no add'l transmitter/receivers needed
4. lightweight, easy to reposition and transport

I put up two shots of the setup and six shots I made
for the tests. All were shot with the K10D in wireless
flash mode with the on board flash set to "control."
Flash WB was selected. All were shot at 1/180, f11,
ISO 100. The two lenses used were the A*85mm f1.4 and
the A50mm f1.4. All of the shots got some slight level
tweaking in CS2 plus I added some blue because my
smaller background paper is a shade darker than my
normal arctic white.
